What we do
Carry out work to protect and enhance the water environments of the Ribble catchment. Over the last nine years we have forged working partnerships that are making real and sustainable improvements to the water environment and to environment awareness. 36km of river restoration work at a cost of £400k has been completed on:
- The rivers Hodder, Loud, Dunsop and Langden.
- Croasdale, Easington and Foulscales Becks.
- The River Ribble at Higher Birkwith and Horton.
- Stainforth, Skirden, Holden, Wigglesworth, Hollow Gill and Rathmel Becks.
- Off-stream spawing channels on the Dunsop
- Skirden
- Spawning channel summer after construction.
This work consisted of fencing, tree planting, bank protection using willow stakes and rock, the creation of farm access fords, stock drinking points and gravel trap weirs.
Until 2005, the Trust was run as a totally voluntary organisation. 2005 saw the appointment of a full time Habitat Programme Manager. Help, in the form of office accommodation, has come from Castle Cement, an industrial company based on the banks of the River Ribble in Clitheroe.
The trust now employees it’s own fisheries scientisit who undertakes fisheries and invertebrate surveys to monitor the health of the river and help indicate where work is needed, as well as where existing work has been successful.
