Physical modifications of rivers and the coastline

This includes the construction of weirs, other instream structures and modification of river banks, such as redirecting flows, that may adversely affect the environment. Large examples may include barrages that negatively impact the environment.

This extends to the estuaries and coastlines, as many of our species utilize the sea during part of their life cycle, such as sea trout, lamprey, eels, and salmon.

What can you do?

Make sure any work you may wish to undertake in or around river and small streams has the appropriate consents (there are financial penalties if these are not in place), and support the organizations who protect the environment.
